Anthony Holbrook- Shodan
Congratulations Anthony Holbrook on successfully passing your Shodan (First Degree Black Belt) test on March 24th, 2012!
Anthony has been training with the Konooburu Dojo for the past 10 years. We have had the privilege of watching him grow and progress as a person, in his martial arts studies, as well as his educational studies. Mr. Holbrook is currently studying nursing at Eastern Kentucky University, and is on track to graduate in 2014. Even though he lives in Richmond to attend classes at EKU, Anthony is a dedicated student and makes time to travel to Barbourville, an 80 mile drive, to train at our dojo every weekend.
Anthony joined the United States Army in 2008. While in boot camp at Fort Benning, Georgia Anthony participated in modern army combatives level one and two, and was chosen to instruct combatives on both squad and platoon levels because of his previous training. He was deployed to Afghanistan in 2008- 2009, and served in the army a total of 3.5 years. While in Afghanistan Anthony served as Infantry Team Leader.
The Konooburu Dojo is proud to have Anthony as a student and a new Shodan Black Belt member. Shodan (初段), literally meaning "beginning degree," is the lowest black belt rank in the Japanese martial arts. We have asked Anthony to write his thoughts and feelings upon receiving his promotion. Here are his words:
